Our group, named "the sweet sixteen" is made up of approximately 20 players who all live in Sun City Lincoln Hills. We are but one of several groups here that travel around Sacramento and enjoy the many golf courses in the Sacramento Valley and the Foothills. Over the last several weeks our group has played: Empire Ranch in Folsom, River Oaks in Nicolaus, Teal Bend out near Sacramento International Airport and last Thursday we played our home course here at Lincoln Hills, the Hills Course. Playing has certainly been a challenge lately with the much needed rain and at times cool and windy weather. Thursday here at Lincoln Hills turned out to be a great golf day, the threatening clouds kept some players away and our normal sixteen players was reduced to fourteen. But our game was on!
We draw cards to select the teams, four Aces, four Kings, four Queens, Yuck! Yuck! and four Jacks, but today we were short two players. The Aces were the team that only had two players, so we drew two names at the end of the day and count the two players scores with the two Aces, making four foursome's scores.
Our game for the day, with Tom Beck naming it, was the 'Stableford' format, with Bogeys counting 1 point, Pars 2, Birdies 3 and Eagles 4, all net scores.
Our handicaps range from single digits up to one person with a 20-something. The 20-something has won more 'closest to the pin' awards than most of the low-teen handicap players! Go figure!
Next, we were off, driving, chipping and putting, lots of comments good and bad, good swings, good putts and some bad. The course was in decent shape, but the greens are not all the same... yes, there were a few comments about that, too.
More about our game and what makes it a competitive affair: each player puts in $10.00 plus and extra $1.00 for our end of the year party with our spouses, held at Turkey Creek. The winning team splits $80.00, the second team splits $60.00 and $5.00 is paid to the players 'closest to the pin' on the par 3's. Remember the 20-something handicap I mentioned earlier?
Meeting at the end of the day in the sports bar is always enlightening, we all wait as Bert Adams reviews the cards and hides all of the scores until the Jacks are in and he can make the announcement. Afterwards, the stories start, "if I had only", the "shoulda, woulda, coulda's", the missed greens and putts... but, all in all, another great day on the golf course here at Lincoln Hills.
At the end of the day, the Jacks had the best score, we got lucky and all had fun. The first picture above is Ron Manas, standing beside the tee box at The Hills hole #7, the second picture is Rich Yamasaki, Bob Bonomini and Ron Manas on the tee box at The Hills hole #7 and finally, the third picture is Frank Deanavic as he watches Tom Beck chip up to The Hills hole #5. The Hills course is always fun, but I'm also looking forward to next week at Turkey Creek.
This is just one piece of the "lifestyle" I enjoy here in Sun City Lincoln Hills.
